Ionic Bonding Continued

Ionic Bonding

Alll atoms bond with each other to end up with full outer shells, similar to the group of “Noble Gases” – He, Ne, Ar etc.
Ionic bonding is the transfer between a metal and a non-metal.

The atom that the electron – usually metal becomes the postive and the atom that accepts the electron becomes the negative ion, which is usually a non-metal.

Ionic Compound Note

When writing the name of the Ionic compound we always write the name of the postive ion(cation) and the name of the negative ion(anion)

Bonding

There are three primary ways in which elements combine together to form compounds. Compounds are substances that we use in our every day lives.

The three primary ways of bonding are

  1. Ionic Bonding
  2. Covalent Bonding
  3. Metalic Bonding

Introduction to the Periodic Table

Metals
About 80% of the elements on the perodic table are metals. The following properties describe metals

  1. Excellent Conductors
  2. Lustrous(or can be lustured)
  3. Malleable
  4. Ductile
  5. High Density

Metalloids
A group of elements that seperate metals and non-metals they display some properties of both metals and non-metals

Non-Metals
Small number of elements on the perodic table, their characterisitics are;

  1. Poor Conductors
  2. Low melting & boiling points
  3. Brittle
  4. Dull
  • Periods*
Elements on the same row are called periods. They use the same number of shells.
For example(eg) Relative sizes are smaller.
